Worry Is Contagious: What Every Parent Needs to Know About Handling Worry and Preventing Anxiety

Presented by Lynn Lyons
Sunday, April 2, 2023 | 12:00pm - 1:45pm EST

Anxiety and worry are normal parts of learning and growing, and how parents respond to uncertainty, big emotions, and the unpredictability of life has a significant impact. As parents, how do we teach the skills our children need? And what do we unknowingly do that makes worry stronger, what Lynn Lyons calls “doing the disorder”? Anxiety can be overwhelming and rigid, but it’s also based on predictable patterns that can be shifted once we learn how it operates. Based on current research and over 30 years of clinical experience, Lynn talks directly about her skill-building approach, equipping parents with a plan for helping and preventing anxiety.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify four common patterns of anxiety that interfere with daily functioning and relationships.

  2. Comprehend the connection between anxiety in children and the development of depression in teens.

  3. Explain the limitations of focusing exclusively on relaxation and elimination of symptoms.
