Transferring Responsibility and Keeping Kids Accountable: Roundtable Session

Friday, February 24, 2023 | 11:45am - 12:15pm EST

This workshop includes pre-session individual work, followed by a small-group discussion roundtable (virtual participants will be split into virtual roundtables). The pre-session work will introduce you to the four parenting styles, as well as updated parenting approaches. Through guided, self-exploratory questions, participants will be asked to identify which parenting style they tend to fall under and how this may enhance or hinder their ability to empower their children to become more autonomous and independent. Participants will then highlight specific skills they want their children to develop over the next 6-12 months. During the roundtable session, participants will discuss the obstacles in their parenting approaches that interfere with actualizing these goals, and will identify specific strategies to implement in order to allow them to achieve their goals. The roundtable discussion will also allow the participant to exchange ideas and to build on one another’s skills list.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify the four parenting approaches and understand the type of approach the participant tends to employ.

  2. Recognize how parenting approaches change in times of stress.

  3. Discover the obstacles that can interfere with empowering youth due to one’s parenting approach.

  4. Specify goals for developing children’s skills/independence over a period of time.

  5. Carry out strategies at home that will assist in the development of these skills.
